Suffering from lung disease, the once spirited writer Kaji (played by Takayuki Sato) feels increasing unease. Poetry, music, and books no longer attract him; he sells off his once treasured collection and is utterly uninterested in debates about ideology and revolution. His increasingly frail body and the bright red blood seem to constantly remind him that the candle of life is gradually extinguishing. The charming Nakata (played by Satoshi Wada) next door and the revolutionary terrorists on the first floor feel like two different worlds to him. The rare lemon at the fruit stand, with its cold, fresh scent, makes him realize something. This film is adapted from the original work of Kaji Motokjiro and is part of the "BUNGO-Japanese Literature Cinema" series.
