The film is based on the true experiences of the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, telling the legendary adventure story of him drifting across the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft in 1947 with five friends. This is the biggest investment in Norway to date (18.5 million dollars), adapted from real events, recounting the story of six adventurers crossing the Pacific on a rudimentary wooden raft. Pal Sverre Hagen, the male star of "The Last King," plays the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl and five friends set out from Peru in South America on a wooden raft, taking 101 days and traveling 4,900 miles to reach the South Pacific Polynesian Islands, creating a miracle in human maritime history. He aimed to prove that Peruvians from ancient times 1,400 years ago crossed the Pacific on such primitive rafts to settle in Polynesia. Heyerdahl chronicled this arduous journey in a book, which has been translated into over 60 languages worldwide, and the documentary made from it won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1952; he is also known as "the most famous Norwegian in the world." However, at the beginning of the story, his ideas were ridiculed by everyone. Behind the Scenes "Kon-Tiki" is a co-production of Norway, the UK, and Denmark, with British producer Jeremy Thomas, who has previously collaborated with Bertolucci on "The Last Emperor" and "The Dreamers." He is also the producer of recent international productions like Wim Wenders' "Pina" and Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method." "Kon-Tiki" will be directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who successfully launched the hit wartime romance "Max Manus" in Norway in 2008 and represented the country for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film that year. Director's Statement What is the film about? The life of the legendary explorer Heyerdahl and his true story of crossing the Pacific on a simple wooden raft in 1947. In other words, it’s a story about never giving up on pursuing one’s dreams. The inspiration behind "Kon-Tiki"? We both grew up in a small town in southern Norway called Sandefjord. Besides making films, we have never pursued anything else and never lived any other way. But when we were kids, the story of "Kon-Tiki" inspired us to chase our dreams, no matter how unattainable they seemed, and to never give up. We hope this film can inspire people to go on adventures. Whether it’s conquering the Matterhorn, sailing to Cuba, or experiencing Route 66, whatever it is, just pursue your dreams. What was the biggest challenge during the preparation? There were many difficulties; at first, it was a complete mess. This was the most complex film shoot we have ever been through, but fortunately, we had many remarkable people around us. Who influenced you during the filming? "Jaws," of course, it’s one of the greatest films of all time. We kept looking for inspiration from movies in the 80s and 90s. Those years, in our view, were the golden age of cinema. Trivia . The Kon-Tiki is named after the ancient name of the Inca sun god, Viracocha. .
