Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson) faces twenty years in prison for stealing bread, and after being released by Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush), his criminal past makes his life difficult. In desperation, Valjean is taken in by the kind Bishop (Peter Vaughan). After Valjean steals the Bishop's silver to escape, he is arrested, but the Bishop lies and claims the silver was a gift to Valjean. This act deeply moves Valjean, and he decides to turn his life around and live responsibly. Ten years pass, and Valjean, now in hiding under a new identity, has become the mayor of a small town and meets the tragic factory worker Fantine (Uma Thurman). Valjean promises the dying Fantine that he will care for her young daughter Cosette (Claire Danes), while Inspector Javert, who has been tracking Valjean, begins to suspect the mayor's true identity.
