Chen Erxiao (played by Chen Peisi), who works at the civil affairs bureau, and his uncle (played by Wei Zongwan) are representatives of two generations in the funeral industry. Chen Erxiao's Red and White Council promotes new practices for funerals, advocating cremation in response to legal requirements; his uncle is an old-school veteran who firmly defends traditional burial customs while also profiting by charging high-interest loans to bereaved families. Chen's mother (played by Zhao Lirong), now over seventy, struggles to change her old-fashioned mindset. Fearing that her son will cremate her, and spurred on by her brother, she forces Erxiao to create a written agreement for burial. On the eve of her birthday, Erxiao's sister (played by Ding Jiali) and brother-in-law (played by Ni Dahong) bring a large red coffin as a birthday gift, which resolves Chen's mother's concerns. A feng shui master determines that she must lie in the coffin during the ninth lunar month to register with the King of Hell, and to test Erxiao's filial piety, she and her brother concoct a ridiculous plan to fake her death, leading to a series of hilarious absurdities...
