In the 1970s, in a certain place in Shanxi. As the Spring Festival approaches, the wife unexpectedly passes away, leaving four young children to Ren Jianguo (played by Sun Min). He has no choice but to send his youngest son, who is born with foot disease, to an orphanage. The orphanage accepts the child and names him Dang Sheng 53 (played by Lian Guan). Later, Dang Sheng 53 is adopted by Geng Ernv from Camel House Village (played by Cao Cuifeng), who frugally saves money to treat the child's foot disease. However, the doctor says that to cure Dang Sheng 53's illness, he needs to go to a large hospital in Beijing, and the treatment cost would be several thousand yuan, which troubles Geng Ernv greatly. She tries the folk remedy suggested by a wandering Taoist (played by Wang Zhe) for Dang Sheng 53's illness, but after several months, she falls ill herself.
