Young Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) is determined to propose to the wealthy heiress Portia (Lynn Collins). To achieve this, he needs 3,000 ducats and, in desperation, he turns to his friend Antonio (Jeremy Irons) for a loan. Coincidentally, Antonio has to borrow this money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock (Al Pacino) due to issues with his own business. Antonio harbors a deep-seated dislike for Jews, and Shylock presents a shocking demand: if Antonio fails to repay the loan on time, he must forfeit a pound of his own flesh. Bassanio finally succeeds in marrying Portia, but Antonio finds himself in trouble due to business failures and Shylock’s demand for repayment. Shylock sees this as an opportunity to avenge the insults he has suffered from Antonio. It seems that Antonio's pound of flesh is inevitable; however, the clever Portia devises a brilliant plan to turn the situation around.
