The story takes place in the capital city of Chang'an during the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Bai Letian (played by Huang Xuan) was originally a high-ranking official in the court, but he willingly chose to be demoted to a palace attendant to gather materials for poetry. Strange deaths continue to occur in Chang'an, and even the current emperor cannot escape a bizarre fate. All these events are related to a mysterious demon cat. Japanese monk Kukai (played by Shota Sometani) travels across the ocean to break a curse for the emperor, but he shares a bond with Bai Letian, and together they are determined to investigate the truth behind the cases.
A poignant rendition of "Qingping Diao" indicates that the demon cat's mischief is intricately connected to the death of the stunning Yang Guifei (played by Zhang Rongrong) from thirty years ago. Following the diary left by Abe no Nakamaro (played by Hiroshi Abe), who was once infatuated with Yang Guifei, Bai Letian and Kukai witness the former glory of the Tang Dynasty and uncover a conspiracy that has been hidden for years.
