Huangmei Opera Film. Feng Suzhen (Yan Fengying) and Li Zhaoting (Chen Wenming) have been schoolmates since childhood and were promised to each other as they grew up. However, after Li's family fell into ruin due to the scheme of a treacherous official, this engagement is obstructed by Suzhen's stepmother, Wang (Huang Fuying), who values wealth over poverty. Despite this, Suzhen remains steadfast in her love and secretly meets Zhaoting in the backyard, giving him a hundred taels of silver along with a jade qilin. Upon hearing the news, Wang rushes over and accuses Zhaoting of theft, sending him to be punished by the authorities, while she arranges for Suzhen to marry into a wealthy family. Refusing to comply, Suzhen escapes her home, disguises herself as a man, and goes to the capital to search for her brother Shaoying (Xiong Shaoyun), who has been driven out by Wang. Suzhen searches everywhere for Shaoying but instead sees an imperial examination announcement. She cleverly decides to take the exam in Zhaoting's name, intending to rescue him once she gains fame. Unexpectedly, she excels and is chosen by the emperor, who admires her beauty and intelligence, to be the imperial consort. Unsure of what to do, her former top scholar brother-in-law, Zhang Shaomin, comes to visit her. After some exchanges, she recognizes him as her brother, and they start plotting their escape. However, an imperial edict summons Suzhen to the palace to marry the princess (Pan Jingli) immediately. On their wedding night, after repeatedly rejecting the princess, Suzhen arouses suspicion, forcing her to reveal the truth. The princess is shocked but moved by Suzhen's loyalty, yet the emperor becomes infuriated upon learning this.
