The story takes place in Normandy in 1819, where a young woman named Jeanne (Judith Chemla) returns to her hometown filled with expectations and fantasies about the future after finishing her time in a convent. There, she meets a young man named Julian (Judith Chemla), and they soon decide to enter into marriage together. However, the joy of their new marriage does not last long, as Jeanne quickly discovers that Julian is actually a hypocritical and callous libertine. He treats Jeanne with great cruelty and indifference, and has an affair with Jeanne's best friend. Julian completely shatters Jeanne's illusions about family and commitment, ultimately paying a painful price for his actions, but his death does not soothe Jeanne's wounded heart, because for her, one nightmare ends and another begins.
