Although Marie (Isabelle Huppert) is now a mother of two, she remains mentally like an innocent child due to having received little formal education. Marie's husband, Paul (François Cluzet), is a soldier who was sent to the front lines during a turbulent time and has not returned, leaving his wife and children to live in poverty and hardship. Marie assists a woman in having an abortion and discovers a business opportunity in it. At that time, abortion was illegal, and assisting in one was punishable by death, but pressured by life's difficulties and the temptation of money, Marie engages in this unlawful and dangerous work. In an unexpected encounter, Marie meets a man named Lucien (Nils Tavernier), and they instantly fall in love, embarking on an illicit affair. Unbeknownst to them, when Paul returns, he uncovers their affair and, in his fury, reports all of Marie's actions to the police, leaving her to face a death sentence.
