Slupov is a member of the Soviet secret police "Cheka," established by Lenin. They indiscriminately arrested intellectuals, aristocrats, Jews, clergy, and their families, conducting interrogations in one minute, trials in ten seconds, and then executing them. In the basement of the Cheka, prisoners, completely naked, faced wooden doors in groups of five, and were collectively shot. No one recorded their last words, there were no witnesses, only nameless corpses. Day after day, illegal trials, executions, and the loading of bodies operated like an assembly line. Slupov is a cold-blooded sexual deviant but also a deep thinker, harboring hatred for his past friends and family. As he attempts to explore the purpose of the revolution and the meaning of the Cheka's existence, he moves towards a breakdown.
