Officer John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) has recently arrested a murderer named Reese, who, aside from saying a few strange phrases before his execution and leaving a cryptic message, seems unremarkable. However, Hobbes soon discovers that Reese’s message points to a police officer, Rob Miliano, who committed suicide thirty years ago. Meanwhile, a series of chain murders occur, with the murderer using the same methods each time, and astonishingly, each victim is a suspect in the previous case. Hobbes visits Rob's daughter, Grethan, who advises Hobbes to abandon the investigation. Eventually, Reese's message is deciphered, revealing that he threatened Hobbes using an ancient Syrian language. Hobbes's persistence leads to further discoveries, as he finds that Rob and the recent murder victims might all be connected to an evil spirit known as "Asasor," which can attach itself to people to commit acts of evil. Hobbes's pursuit of justice becomes increasingly difficult. How will this battle between man and evil spirit conclude?
