The story is inspired by the shocking 2016 concrete body concealment case in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, at the industrial building on Gray House Corner Street. The victim, a 28-year-old man named Zhang Wanli, was allegedly killed by four young men while pursuing a debt. Afterward, his body was hidden in a homemade concrete coffin. The incident occurred on April 4, 2016. Zhang went missing after reportedly visiting the unit involved in the case to chase the debt from a tenant. On April 6, his girlfriend reported him missing, prompting the police to classify it as a missing person case. The Missing Persons Investigation Team of the Hong Kong Island Police, based on Zhang's last call records before his disappearance, discovered that he had contacted a male tenant of the unit in question. They pinpointed the location based on the address and reviewed surveillance footage, which showed Zhang taking the elevator with the male tenant and another man to the unit, after which he was never seen again. Thereafter, other individuals were spotted coming and going from the unit, and some even brought in concrete. The police attempted to contact the male tenant but to no avail. On April 29, following their investigation of the unit, the police unveiled the concrete body concealment case, confirming the victim was Zhang Wanli. After tracking down the case, the police believed that four individuals involved had fled to Taiwan. They stayed there for a month, causing a sensation in both regions. This case was the first to involve law enforcement and extradition regulations between the two areas since Hong Kong's return to China. The four young individuals transitioned from committing a crime to the horrific act of burying a body, ultimately escaping to Taiwan while living half of their time as fugitives and the other half as tourists, which formed the prototype for this crime movie.
