The story takes place in Xinzhuang Village, located in western Henan Province. Due to poverty, Hei Dun (played by Li Wangxiong) is 27 years old and has yet to marry and start a family. Ding Yunhe (played by Yu Shaokang) is a retired railway worker with exceptional skills in melon cultivation. In the 1950s, he was labeled a rightist for making a mistaken remark, but after being rehabilitated, he was invited to guide watermelon planting across various places.
