Ed (John Lithgow) is a cautious man who likes to prepare for all aspects of life in advance. This would normally be a wonderful quality, but unfortunately, Ed firmly believes that America will face destruction in the near future. Therefore, he intends to prepare as thoroughly as possible before that happens, such as by building a shelter room in his home. Ronnie (Blythe Danner) is a shopaholic who cannot suppress her desire to buy, always filling her home with various items. Fate brings Ed and Ronnie together, and Ed mistakenly believes that Ronnie is someone who, like him, is always ready for anything. He invites her to join him, and in the process, the two spark a romantic connection.
