On the eve of the victory in the Second Sino-Japanese War, Nationalist General Lei Yifang (played by Huang Xiaoming) achieved a significant victory at a great cost. The survivors of this battle include communicator Tong Daqing (played by Tong Dawei) and Taiwanese Japanese army doctor Yan Zekun (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro). After the war, Lei Yifang quickly fell in love with the wealthy young lady Zhou Yunfen (played by Song Hye-kyo); Tong Daqing developed feelings for the woman Yu Zhen (played by Zhang Ziyi), who posed as his wife for photos. Shortly after, they each went their separate ways. Yan Zekun successfully returned to Taiwan, taking the "The Crossing" back and forth across the strait to buy medicinal materials, but could not forget his childhood sweetheart, the Japanese woman Yazi (played by Masami Nagasawa). The outbreak of civil war forced Lei Yifang and Tong Daqing back to the battlefield, while Zhou Yunfen and her family took the "The Crossing" to Taiwan, beginning a long wait. The misfortunes of history brought everyone together, and "The Crossing" became a significant concern for several couples throughout their lives. This film is the first part of "The Crossing."
