François (played by Gregory Peck) is a devoted Christian and a young missionary. Driven by a sense of responsibility and mission, he travels thousands of miles alone to China, determined to spread the seeds of Christianity in this unfamiliar land. However, the process is far more challenging than he imagined. Faced with a group of people who speak a different language and have never been exposed to Christian culture, François feels overwhelmed. However, he does not give up. Amidst poverty, disease, and hostility, he falls time and again, but rises again and again. Finally, after several years, François has gathered a group of followers behind him. Through his perseverance and effort, he has carved out a virgin land for Christianity on Chinese soil.
