The former star Norma (played by Gloria Swanson) is nearly 50 years old, and her once dazzling beauty is slowly withering away in her abandoned mansion, with only her friend Max (Erich von Stroheim) by her side. She hasn't given up on her dream of reigniting her glory; the script for "Salomé" is awaiting writing, and the fallen screenwriter Joe (played by William Holden), who has escaped here to avoid debt, is the best candidate for this project. Norma takes him in, provides him with a comfortable environment to write, and gradually falls for him. However, Joe cannot accept this woman whose youth has faded. He rejects her and turns to plot a new script with another beautiful woman, and they fall in love passionately.
Norma learns of Joe's "betrayal," and she humbly begs him, but cannot sway his drifting heart. Ultimately, Norma raises a gun to confront Joe as he prepares to leave.
