In 17th century France, music master Jean-Pierre Marielle (played by Jean-Pierre Marielle) is unable to pull himself out of the grief over his wife's death. He takes his two daughters away from the noise of the world, living a secluded life. Whenever he plays the viola in his hands, the figure of his wife appears before him. The handsome and talented young man Marais (played by Guillaume Depardieu and Gérard Depardieu) becomes a disciple of Columbus to learn music. Full of ambition, he disregards his master's teachings and strives to become one of the famous violinists in Versailles through his own skills. This leads to a rift between the master and disciple, while Columbus's eldest daughter Madeleine (played by Anne Brochet) closely follows her lover Marais. Surrounded by excess and temptation, Marais gradually loses his original authenticity under the allure of luxury, leading to a broken relationship with Madeleine, and the piece he once composed for her, "The Girl of My Dreams," becomes a painful memory... This film won seven awards at the 1992 César Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Anne Brochet), and Best Film.
