David (played by Nicolas Cage) is a weather man, but he lacks the professional knowledge needed for his job. When the weather forecast is not ideal, viewers throw trash at him in the street. David feels gloomy about his life, and his divorce from his wife (played by Hope Davis) is another blow to him. Now, he has an opportunity to go to New York to work again, but he must face a strained relationship with his children. His son Mike is harassed by a counselor he met during rehab; his daughter Shelly is mocked for her weight by classmates, leading to her melancholic personality. What saddens David even more is that his novelist father Robert (played by Michael Caine) is terminally ill. David hopes his father can see his success and wishes to reunite with his ex-wife to live as a family in New York.
