Annie (Lindsay Lohan) and Hallie (Lindsay Lohan) are two girls who meet at summer camp. They look strikingly similar but do not get along at all. By chance, they discover that they are actually twin sisters. They begin to inquire about each other’s lives and discuss their parents: they met on a luxury cruise ship and got married during the trip, but ended up separating due to a breakdown in their relationship. Because of this divorce, one twin was taken to California by their father (Dennis Quaid), living in a beautiful vineyard; the other was taken to London by their mother, a wedding dress designer (Natasha Richardson). As a result, they have never met and even don’t know of each other's existence. Upon learning this truth, the two mischievous girls devise a plan: they decide to switch identities and live in each other's families.
