Young, wealthy, and basking in the Italian sun, this is the life that Tom Ripley (played by Matt Damon) desires, yet it is already possessed by Dickie Greenleaf (played by Jude Law). Ripley is an ordinary young man with nothing worth bragging about. He is tasked by a wealthy businessman to go to Italy and persuade his wayward son Dickie to return to their home in America. However, upon arrival, Ripley becomes deeply enchanted by Dickie's lifestyle: the beautiful villa, the high-end luxurious resorts, extravagant spending, and his lovely, gentle girlfriend—all of which he envies greatly. Ripley's desire for Dickie's life ultimately expands into wanting to take Dickie's place. His meticulous planning astounds those around him, and his calm criminal methods catch others off guard. Just as he revels in the dream he has built for himself, an unexpected coincidence reveals his true intentions, prompting police attention and an investigation... This film is adapted from the 1955 novel of the same name by female writer Patricia Highsmith. French director René Clément made a film based on the novel in 1960 called "Purple Noon," starring French actor Alain Delon.
