This film is based on a true story. Bob (Greg Kinnear) is a charming university professor who is well-liked by both teachers and students. In his spare time, Bob enjoys making small inventions, and one day he conceptualizes a device that can automatically wipe rain off car windows — the windshield wiper — and successfully invents it. However, shortly after the windshield wiper is introduced to the market, it fails to gain the attention of manufacturers. Not long after, Bob discovers that this device is being used without his authorization by Detroit automakers in their products. Angry, Bob files a lawsuit against the car manufacturers, but this prolonged legal battle drags Bob and his family into a bottomless vortex. The road to protecting his rights is long and challenging, during which Bob even receives death threats concerning his life.
