In a small town in southern Italy, the quirky little boy Toto (played by Salvatore Cascio) loves watching movies, especially those projected by the projectionist Alfredo (played by Philippe Noiret). He and Alfredo become close friends, finding joy in childhood life through the films.
Kind-hearted Alfredo organizes an outdoor screening to let more audiences enjoy movies, but the film catches fire. Toto saves Alfredo from the flames, but Alfredo becomes blind. Toto becomes the only person in town who can project films, taking over Alfredo’s role as the town's projectionist.
As Toto (played by Marco Leonardi) grows up, he falls in love with the banker’s daughter, Elena (played by Agnese Nano). Their pure first love is beautiful as paradise, but their vows are interrupted by Elena’s father. Toto goes to serve in the military while Elena goes to university. Heartbroken, Toto, encouraged by Alfredo, leaves the town to pursue his dreams...
Thirty years later, Alfredo passes away. By this time, Toto has become a successful director. He returns to his hometown and sees the dilapidated Cinema Paradiso, reflecting on the past with deep emotion.
