Mademoiselle Mariette (Kay Francis) is a beautiful, wealthy widow who runs a company with a flirtatious style. By chance, she meets a man named Rivaud (Herbert Marshall). Rivaud is handsome and charming, and Mariette quickly falls for his allure, hiring him as her personal secretary, which is exactly what Rivaud dreams of. It turns out that Rivaud is an alias; this suave man is actually an international thief. He teams up with his former lover Lily (Miriam Hopkins) to attempt to steal Mariette's wealth. The company's chairman, Adolf (C. Aubrey Smith), becomes aware of Rivaud's plot and informs Mariette, but she doesn't believe his warnings, and Rivaud's scheme appears to be on the verge of success.
