Nikander (Matti Pellonpää) is a garbage truck driver for a sanitation company. His old colleague plans to raise funds to establish his own sanitation company and invites Nikander to invest his skills, but the colleague suddenly falls ill and dies. Nikander's life returns to a stagnant state. Unwilling to accept his situation, he resorts to drinking and meets his future colleague, Mikkala, while in detention. Mikkala occasionally interferes with Nikander’s secret pursuit of supermarket cashier Ilona (Kati Outinen), but he remains Nikander's most reliable friend. Ilona, seeking revenge on the supermarket manager who stole her money box, enlists Nikander's help to find her a new job at a clothing store. The clothing store manager gets caught between Nikander and Ilona’s relationship, but Nikander ultimately wins back his love. This film won the Best Film award at the 1987 Jussi Awards in Finland. It is the first part of director Aki Kaurismäki's proletarian trilogy.
