In the 1990s, in Beijing. Chen Chen (played by Shi Chen) lives with his grandfather (played by Li Ding) while his parents work abroad. Grandfather has dedicated his life to postal service and now lives alone with his grandson after retirement. One day, the grandfather and grandson tie a letter from a deceased recipient to a kite and send it into the sky, with the grandfather telling Chen Chen that the recipient will receive it in heaven. Soon, Chen Chen's mother (played by Xiao Xiong) returns from abroad. She disapproves of her father-in-law's laxity towards Chen Chen, assigning him daily lessons in English and piano, disrupting their previous peaceful life, and Grandfather moves back to his old home. Chen Chen misses his grandfather day and night, resents English and piano lessons, and cries incessantly, making his mother contemplate. When Grandfather's birthday arrives, Chen Chen and his good friend Lin Lin bring him a birthday card. Grandfather takes them out to fly kites, and after a tiring day filled with children's laughter, he passes away peacefully in his sleep...
