Ellis (played by Dennis Quaid) is a businessman with a very dark past. His father Roy (played by James Caan) is a murderer who committed a massacre. The shadow cast by his father followed Ellis into adulthood. Later, during a trip, Ellis meets a woman named Davis (played by Meg Ryan), who is gentle and kind, and her presence saves Ellis from his chaotic life. Soon, the two fall in love and become a couple. In fact, Davis also has a tragic past; all her family members were murdered, and she is the only survivor.
