In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the gypsum plant, a vital economic pillar of Empire, Nevada, shut down, leaving the town deserted and its ZIP code discontinued. After the death of her husband, Fern (played by Frances McDormand), who had spent nearly her entire life in Empire, struggles to make ends meet. To minimize living costs, she moves her modest belongings into a converted van and embarks on a journey across the West, working various jobs along the way. She finds temporary work on the Amazon assembly line, in a carnival café, and in national forests. Throughout her travels, she meets and bonds with many fellow van dwellers, helping each other and forming friendships.
