This is a very strange film, Annunciation --- I looked it up in the dictionary, and besides meaning "to declare, announce," it also means "the angel's announcement," originating from the day in the Bible when the angel informed the Virgin Mary that she was to give birth to Jesus, on March 25th in the Western calendar. This indicates that the film contains profound metaphysical and religious content. Indeed, part of the film is adapted from the well-known story of Adam and Eve, who were tempted by the serpent transformed by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit of knowledge of good and evil, resulting in their expulsion from the Garden of Eden by an angry God. The film does not delve much into what happened in the Garden of Eden but focuses instead on the strange journey Adam and Eve undergo after their expulsion, a journey entirely imagined by the director! Adam becomes a general in ancient Athens, later escaping Athens to become a Crusader during the Byzantine period, a revolutionary leader named Danton during the French Revolution, a survivor and witness during the plague's spread across Europe, and even a vagabond on the streets of London. Adam and Eve experience countless betrayals and brutalities, savagery and fascism, sin and fear... The director, András Jeles, showcases fantastical and bizarre imagination that fills the film with mystical and metaphorical imagery and content, while time has long since faded in the film's surrealistic and symbolic cinematic language. More uniquely, all the actors in the entire film are children aged 8 to 12! It's really hard to call it a children's film; I'm puzzled as to why the director would let a group of children portray such a depiction of humanity's dark side in this profound and enigmatic epic. The film's poetic and dramatic dialogue seems too difficult for a bunch of adolescent children, and some nude scenes in the film appear challenging for minors to act in. The director attempts to express the dark horrors and absurdities of some eras more profoundly using a younger cast, a characteristic that resembles the style of Italian director Pasolini, as seen in his controversial work "Salò," which this film might even surpass. However, what is impressive is that all the children deliver astonishing performances! They demonstrate an extraordinary ability to handle complex and profound roles. The beautiful cinematography, spanning the southern plains of Hungary, mountains, ancient castles, and coastlines, along with the outstanding performances of the young actors, makes this peculiar and unique film even more memorable, offering us a strange adventure about existentialism. It is rare in film history for children to perform in adult-themed films; perhaps this is just a peculiar method for a few individualistic directors to convey their film's themes more profoundly. I have also seen a film called "MALADOLESCENZA" that similarly used children to portray a complex love triangle, giving me a refreshingly beautiful yet heartbreaking experience, completely devoid of any so-called dirtiness or filth. I think this is a unique style of such highly controversial films. It is also worth mentioning that the film's cinematography and music are exceptionally outstanding, with dreamy cinematography coupled with moving choral music as a backdrop, making you feel as if you are in a dreamlike beauty.
