A group of unpaid construction workers sail abroad in search of a better life, only to mysteriously disappear at sea overnight. The women they left behind in Dakar suffer from inexplicable fevers. Seventeen-year-old Aida privately mourns her lover Souleiman (one of the deceased workers), but she has already been promised to another man. On her wedding night, a fire breaks out, and a young police officer is assigned to investigate. Little does he know, the disgruntled workers have returned, transformed into restless and possessive ghosts. Many among them seek revenge for their unjust treatment, while Souleiman has a different purpose: he wants to see Aida one last time.
