During World War II, every prisoner in the German POW camp yearns for freedom. American soldier Hilts (played by Steve McQueen) has been planning an escape since the first day he entered the camp. Despite over a dozen failed attempts, Hilts never gives up. This time, he and British officer Roger plan to secretly dig a tunnel to lead 250 men to freedom. Everyone contributes to the plan: some are responsible for making civilian clothes for their escape, some for forging documents, and others for stockpiling food, etc. However, on the day their tunnel is completed, it is discovered by the Germans. As the date for the escape draws near, Hilts and his companions begin a new round of digging work.
