Michèle (played by Juliette Binoche) is a wealthy young woman who is not happy inside. After a break-up and suffering from an eye disease, she decides to wander into the outside world. She loves to paint and meets Alex (played by Denis Lavant), a man with a broken leg, on the street, capturing his twitching face in her artwork. Klaus is a homeless man with nothing who falls in love with Michèle. They begin a passionate romance, warming and healing each other amidst their wandering. Michèle's vision gradually becomes blurred, and her wish is to see the paintings in a museum before she goes blind. Posters searching for Michèle’s family cover the streets, and Alex feels that Michèle is about to leave him, filling him with sadness. In a fit of pain, he shoots off his own finger and crazily burns the missing person notices, unable to hold onto a love that is about to fade. However, Michèle ultimately proposes a breakup, returning to her former life. Later, on a snowy Christmas Eve, Michèle finally reunites with Alex on the sparkling Seine River.
