"The Second Life" depicts the early Republic era, where a struggling theatrical troupe receives significant assistance from a wealthy young master. When they first meet, the young master and the troupe's leading lady feel an inexplicable connection. The two fall in love at first sight and pledge themselves to each other. However, the young master's mother vehemently opposes her son marrying an actress. Meanwhile, the leading lady's senior, who has secretly loved her for years, out of jealousy for her romance with the young master, kills her during a performance of "Killing Xi in the Tower." "The Third Life" narrates the story of a medium and his brother living in Penghu Island in contemporary times. A modern dance artist arrives in a fishing village in Penghu and shares a fateful encounter with the medium, instantly falling in love. The dance artist wants to take the medium to Taipei for a new life. The medium finds himself caught in the conflict between traditional values and modern thoughts, familial love and romantic love. Ultimately, during a ritual, the medium refuses to ascend the knife ladder. The master, helpless, climbs the knife ladder himself and tragically falls to his death. The medium and the dance artist finally become husband and wife.
