In 1942, in a small town in occupied Slovakia, the Germans were overseeing the construction of a massive wooden monument, but the local carpenter Tony (played by Jozef Króner) was unconcerned, as his wife's nagging had already caused him enough distress. Tony's sister's life changed significantly after marrying an officer, and Tony, leveraging his brother-in-law's privileges, received official papers granting him ownership of a Jewish shop on the street. The shop owner was a 78-year-old Jewish widow, Lautmann (played by Ida Kaminska), who was hard of hearing and nearly blind. While entangled with her, Tony soon discovered that the store was just an empty shell with very little inventory left. However, caring for Lautmann could earn him compensation from the Jewish organization, so Tony secretly worked at the store while claiming to be the owner to outsiders. Shortly thereafter, the Germans began to arrest Jews and transport them to concentration camps. Tony wanted to hide Lautmann but was undergoing tremendous inner turmoil. Outside the store, Jews gathered under the monument, while inside, Tony faced the confused old woman and drowned his sorrows in alcohol... This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1966.
