Synopsis: In the mid-19th century, a young couple, Kristina and Karl Oskar, lived in a small rural community in Småland, southern Sweden. They barely made a living on a small piece of barren land. Times were tough, and people faced harsh weather and diminishing harvests, leading to despair. Their first child died from hunger after stealing food. This famine, along with the child's death, made the mother accept the father's decision to emigrate to America. They set off together with another family fleeing religious persecution and a man escaping from a bad marriage. The remainder of the film depicts their arduous journey aboard a rocking ship as they cross the Atlantic and travel inland, eventually reaching what is now Minnesota, USA. The entire migration took 10 weeks. In Minnesota, the survivors will begin their new lives in this new world... This film is an epic tale of Nordic emigrants to America, featuring long takes and breathtaking natural scenes. The shadow of "The Conquerors" can be seen in this film. Starring Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.
