The film tells the story of World War I, focusing on the rise of the dictator Hynkel (played by Charlie Chaplin) of Tomania. His aggressive expansion leads to perpetual warfare and despair among the populace. He also implements a conspiracy-driven policy, inciting hostility and hatred against the Jewish people, plunging them into dire suffering. Charlie, a Jewish barber (also played by Charlie Chaplin), conscripted into service, grapples with the oppressive regime. When Charlie escapes across the border, he is mistaken for the dictator Hynkel by the stationed troops, seizing the opportunity to deliver a grand speech "for freedom." The film is Charlie Chaplin's first sound film, made during the darkest period of Hitler's rule, featuring sharp satire and caricature of him throughout. The film received five nominations at the 13th Academy Awards (1941) for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Writing, and Best Music.
