The film tells the story of World War I, focusing on the rise of the dictator Hynkel (played by Charlie Chaplin) of Tomania. His aggressive expansion leads to perpetual warfare and despair among the populace. The film is Charlie Chaplin's first sound film, made during the darkest period of Hitler's rule, featuring sharp satire and caricature of him throughout.
