In the 15th year of the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty, the country is facing internal and external troubles. General Sun Chuanting (played by Dai Liren) is urgently tasked with leading his wife, Feng (played by Feng Bo), to Tongguan to resist Li Zicheng's army. Meanwhile, the wandering doctor Wu Youke (played by Feng Yuanzheng), with a heart for saving others, arrives in Tongguan to visit his mentor, Zhao Chuan (played by Qian Xuega). Faced with a great enemy, the soldiers in Sun Chuanting's army fall ill with a mysterious disease, while he also has to handle the pressure from Emperor Chongzhen (played by Yu Shaoqun) to mobilize troops and the selfish profiteering of local gentry like Gu Qingyuan (played by Ma Jingwu).
