The story takes place in the late Northern Song dynasty, where Chaoshan City is divided into two by the Haijiang River. The local people, who should have been as close as brothers due to their shared waters, harbor deep-seated grievances due to various conflicts and misunderstandings, eventually escalating to fierce armed confrontations.
