The film tells the legendary story of the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang, who traveled for 17 years, overcoming difficulties and dangers to journey to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures. During the prosperous reign of the Tang dynasty, the young monk Xuanzang (played by Huang Xiaoming) risked his life to illegally cross the border in search of the true essence of Buddhism. Along the way, he faced numerous hardships, including natural disasters and human misfortunes, while deeply understanding the suffering of the people. Surrounded by officials and soldiers, betrayed by his apprentice, buried in a sea of sand, and cut off from water and food, Xuanzang remained devoted to his pursuit of the Dharma. He ultimately reached India, where he spread good thoughts and diligently practiced Buddhism. By the time he successfully returned home after the debate at the Undefeated Conference, he had become a man over fifty.
