The film tells the legendary story of the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang, who traveled for 17 years, overcoming difficulties and dangers to journey to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures. During the prosperous reign of the Tang dynasty, the young monk Xuanzang (played by Huang Xiaoming) risked his life to illegally cross the border in search of the true essence of Buddhism.
