The story takes place in Northeast China during the September 18th Incident. Xiaozi's father (played by Lu Qiushi) has known the Japanese "merchant" Chuanshima (played by Ti Yu Hui) for more than ten years. After the incident occurs, Chuanshima suddenly turns against him overnight, shocking Xiaozi's father. Xiaozi's father is from a prominent family in Xitai Tun, with land spanning a hundred miles around. His biggest regret is not having a son to carry on the family lineage, so when he has a daughter in his old age, he names her Xiaozi (played by Liang Siqi). The family's servant has a son named Chunyang (played by Zhou Hong Sai), whom he specifically hired to keep Xiaozi company. With the Lunar New Year approaching, Xiaozi's second aunt (played by Liu Mai), being a lively person, begins to plan for a lively celebration like in previous years. Unexpectedly, Chuanshima arrives with people to collect grain, and they violently massacre Xitai Tun to clear obstacles for the Japanese settlers. Xiaozi's father is forced to become a traitor, and the second aunt vows to drive out the invaders, even if it costs her life...
