In August 1944, on the eve of the liberation of Paris, German military commander in Paris, Scholtitz, was ordered to blow up all the landmarks of Paris. The Swedish ambassador, Raoul Nordling, entered his office, and the two engaged in a battle of wits and exchanged heartfelt words over drinks, ultimately defusing the plan to destroy Paris.
