This is a story depicting the lives and struggles of illegal Chinese immigrants working in New York. The protagonist, Ding Ming, is assaulted in his home by two gangsters at the start of the film, who demand that he pay back the $800 he owes for his smuggling into the U.S. that same day. Thus begins his frantic and busy day. A co-worker in the restaurant even sacrifices his own working hours just to help him settle his debts sooner. The entire film follows Ding Ming’s day-to-day work, revealing the unseen realities of illegal immigrants. The role of Ding Ming is played by Charles Jang, a Korean-American who spent a year learning Chinese in Taiwan for this film, which is entirely in Mandarin. The scene-stealing restaurant manager is played by Li Yundi. Filmed primarily in the restaurant located beneath director Shih-Ching Tsou’s apartment and made on an extremely low budget, this movie delivers stunning drama and tension, making it a touching and must-see work. We hope to faithfully portray the hardships faced by illegal Chinese immigrants living in New York, and we are pleased that this film can resonate with and draw the attention of many. Of course, the entire filming process and completion were only possible with the help of mentors and friends. The positive reactions from all sectors currently are the most gratifying thing for us. Sean Baker: Born in New Jersey, USA, he graduated from the New York Film School. His 2000 work "Four Letter Words" focuses on the issues faced by suburban teenagers. In 2004, he completed the award-winning "Delivery" with a budget of just $3,000, and is currently dedicated to the post-production of a film about West African immigrants selling counterfeit goods in New York's wholesale market, titled "Prince of Broadway." Shih-Ching Tsou: Born in Taipei, Taiwan, she is a writer, producer, and director. After completing "Delivery" with Sean Baker in 2004, she is now preparing for her new film "Left Handed Girl."
