The three siblings gather in the countryside to celebrate their mother Hélène's (Edith Scob) seventy-fifth birthday, with three generations of family enjoying a joyful reunion. After the meal, however, the mother brings up how to handle her estate after her death to her eldest son Frédéric (Charles Berling), who becomes a bit irritated and doesn't want to discuss this topic. Nevertheless, Hélène insists on arranging the fate of all her belongings, informing her son that the ancestral home will be sold, and questions about what to do with the artwork of her dear uncle and painter Paul arise. Frédéric insists that the house should be preserved for the children to inherit.
A few months later, Hélène passes away. Frédéric, who has been living and working in Paris, wishes to keep the ancestral home, but his younger brother Jérémie (Jérémie Rénier), who is about to move to China for work, and his sister Adrienne (Juliette Binoche), who is about to get married in New York and start a family, agree to sell the house since they won’t be returning to Paris. Everything unfolds just as their mother had predicted. Frédéric reluctantly accepts and begins to deal with the situation.
In the last month before the house is sold, Frédéric's children throw a grand party in the ancestral home, showcasing their youth and perhaps continuing the emotional bond with their ancestors in a different way.
