In 1824, Vienna. 23-year-old Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger) becomes the manuscript copyist for Beethoven (Ed Harris), who has already gone deaf and is absorbed in creating his “Farewell” work. Anna initially hopes to learn from Beethoven in order to become an outstanding composer herself, but soon discovers that Beethoven is a stubborn, rude madman completely immersed in his own world. The premiere of Beethoven's “Ninth Symphony” is a success thanks to Anna’s help in a crisis, and their relationship gradually improves. However, when Anna presents a piece she has written for Beethoven's critique, she is met with his sharp and scathing sarcasm, prompting her to leave him in anger. At Beethoven's request, Anna returns to his side and attempts to accept the harsh words he offers as advice; it seems she gradually begins to understand this genius master... This film was nominated for Best European Film at the 2007 Goya Awards, known as the "Spanish Oscars."
