In the morning, the devout farmer Töre (played by Max von Sydow) and his wife prayed, and then arranged for their daughter Karin to ride to the church to deliver some candles. Karin put on her newly made finery and invited the family's adopted daughter, Ingrid, to join her. Ingrid, who was pregnant, was indulgent in nature and had always envied Karin's bright life. Before setting out, Ingrid secretly placed a toad in Karin's food. When they reached a forest, Ingrid told Karin to go on alone while she followed to observe. The three shepherds in the woods saw Karin alone and had ill intentions; after assaulting her, they killed her and took her coat. In the evening, the three shepherds stayed at Töre's home, trying to sell Karin's clothes to Töre's wife. Panicked, Ingrid also returned home, confessing to Töre about her curse against Karin. After bathing and changing, Töre resolved to avenge his daughter by punishing himself with birch branches... This film won the 1961 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a special recommendation at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.
