This film is based on true historical events from World War II, depicting the brutal war between the United States and Japan on Wake Island during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The U.S. military deployed strong artillery on Wake Island to prevent Japanese aggression in the Pacific region. However, the outbreak of the Pearl Harbor attack changed everything. The successful Japanese forces, on their way back, launched a fierce assault on Wake Island with overwhelming firepower. The defending American soldiers fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to the enemy's numbers and suffered a devastating defeat... The film received four Oscar nominations in 1943 and won the Best Director award from the New York Film Critics Circle in 1942.
