The story is set in a remote villa in Tuscany, Italy, during the 1950s. Emilia Clarke plays a nurse named Verena, who is hired to take care of a mute young heir who has stopped speaking after losing his mother, hoping to help him regain communication. As Verena observes the boy step by step, she begins to sense something amiss; there seems to be a powerful and mysterious curse controlling the child, and this curse originates from a stone wall in the villa.
