The film tells the story of Murphy (played by Peter O'Toole) during the final days of World War II, where he is the sole survivor of a Nazi submarine attack. Rescued by Louis (played by Philippe Noiret), the two become friends. However, Murphy harbors an obsession: he wants to destroy the Nazi submarine. To achieve this goal, he obtains a torpedo that was launched from the submarine but did not detonate. Just as Murphy is preparing to carry out his plan, the news of the war's end arrives.
