The film tells the story of Murphy (played by Peter O'Toole) during the final days of World War II, where he is the sole survivor of a Nazi submarine attack. Rescued by Louis (played by Philippe Noiret), the two become friends. However, Murphy harbors an obsession: he wants to destroy the Nazi submarine. To achieve this goal, he obtains a torpedo that was launched from the submarine but did not detonate. Just as Murphy is preparing to carry out his plan, the news of the war's end arrives. Although the war is over, Murphy cannot forget the crimes of the Nazis and is determined not to let the submarine escape. This creates an internal conflict: should he pursue personal revenge even though the war has ended and peace has arrived? The challenges Murphy faces are not only technical but also psychological. Will he be able to find justice in peacetime, and can he let go of his obsession with the past?
