At the beginning of the new semester, the teachers and students return to a regular community school. François Marin (played by François Bégaudeau), a French teacher and homeroom teacher, faces a new class of first-year students and continues to teach in an honest and somewhat argumentative way. This group of around 14-year-old students is lively in their thinking, often questioning Marin or engaging in banter and gossip during the relaxed classroom atmosphere, forcing Marin to repeatedly interrupt the lesson to address countless trivial issues. The school gathers immigrant students from various countries, and the arising problems are often reflected in classroom details. Marin tries his best to help the students find self-respect, but these children, skilled in giving teachers headaches, seem to be resistant to Marin's words. The verbal sparring in the classroom and some students' antagonistic attitudes towards the teacher create a tension that could erupt at any moment. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and stars François Bégaudeau, who is also the author and screenwriter of the original novel.
